The Students' Astronomical Observatory - SAO Plana operates since the authmn of 2013. It was realized after two years of voluntary work and own funds of faculty staff, PhD students and students from the Department of Astronomy at the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski".

SAO-Plana is situated in an extremely suitable place - The Geodetic Observatory - Plana, where the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG BAS) kindly provided to the Department of Astronomy a small building with a space with sliding roof. The Geodetic observatory is situated in a region with very good astro-climate, the altitude is 1250 m, and its location behind the eastern hillsides of Vitosha mountain makes it a place with almost zero light pollution. Despite the minimal distance of only 35 km from the center of Sofia, the dust pollution is also minimal.

The observatory has a 35 cm Newtonian telescope equipped with STL 11000M CCD camera and UBVRI filters.

Additional information about the renovation and the activities at SAO-Plana can be found in this site.
